During the second half of the 19th century,
Connecticut's Governor Winthrop issue his opinion of
women pursuing college
degrees by saying they should refrain from meddling
"in such things as are proper for men, whose minds
are stronger." Fortunately for society, there were
many women - and men - who disagreed. Among those
who found such words unacceptable were the ten
forward-thinking women who founded Alpha Phi
Fraternity at Syracuse University in 1872.
Alpha Phi is now one of the oldest and largest
fraternities in North America, thanks in large part
to the ideals and vision possessed by those ten
women.
Since the very beginning, Alpha Phi has continually
been innovative leaders. Alpha Phi is known as
a "Fraternity" because it was founded before the
term sorority had been coined. It was the first
female Fraternity to build a chapter house, to
publish a continuous publication, to select
delegates to visit collegiate chapters and even to
launch a Website!
Alpha Phi is a sisterhood of individuals who share a
commitment to excellence in everything they do and a
passionate desire to help each other along the way.
We seek to equip our women with the skills to
exemplify the Alpha Phi spirit of leadership,
philanthropy, friendship and learning.
The skills Alpha Phis learn are not ones that will
be tossed away following graduation. Leading an
Alpha Phi meeting is similar to leading a
professional meeting and organizing a philanthropic
event mirrors the work many professionals perform
during an average business day. Outside of each
school's chapter, Alpha Phi offers a myriad of
opportunities to learn and grow: from the Emerging
Leaders institute to etiquette classes! But Alpha
Phi is more than just a collegiate experience.
Opportunities extend far beyond graduation,
for a lifetime of growth, friendship and support.
