Alpha Phi International Fraternity launched its first communications internship program during winter 2004 to help actively promote our mission of scholarship, service and sisterhood. Students were had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in magazine publication, marketing/public relations and event planning. Since then the Fraternity has offered the same opportunity to other collegians majoring in communications, public relations or a related discipline.

Please describe your internship experience in three words, and then elaborate on your answer. Interesting. Fun. Rewarding.

The work I did while at A Phi gave me a great introduction into the public relations business. Not only did I get to take care of certain pages in the Quarterly magazine, like the marriage and birth updates, which were really fun, but I also put together a final project that was a PR proposal of how I would publicize a mock philanthropy event held by my chapter. Everyone in the office was really friendly and I really felt like I was a part of the Quarterly team. I also got to interview an Alpha Phi member who participated on CBS's reality program, Survivor, and wrote and article about her.

What did you expect to get out of your internship with Alpha Phi? Did you achieve that goal? I expected to get more experience in the PR/Journalism field out of my internship with Alpha Phi and I definitely achieved that. I definitely think that my time spent working at Alpha Phi helped me prepare for future internships, like the one I'm currently doing now.

What was one object that helped you during the course of the internship or couldn't survive without? Definitely working so close to my chapter house helped a lot. I could leave the house five minutes before I had to be at work and make it there on time.

Where are you now? Right now I'm in New York City doing an editorial internship with Sales an Marketing Management magazine, a trade magazine for those in the sales management area (marketing, advertising). I love it! I'm one of seven people who put out the magazine, so I'm getting a lot of writing and editing experience. Last summer I did an editorial internship at Playboy magazine.

This coming June I plan to begin graduate school at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. I plan to finish my master's classes this March and graduate in June 2007 with a bachelor's and master's in journalism.

Please describe your internship experience in three words, and then elaborate on your answer. Learn. Connect. Contribute.

During my three months with Alpha Phi International I not only learned about the communications and marketing responsibilities of our organization,

but I connected with Alpha Phi as a global network on a whole new level. I met and worked with experienced professionals that enable our sorority to serve its many members. I also now understand and truly appreciate the influence that Alpha Phis have on our country and our world. Lastly, I contributed to the overall mission of Alpha Phi International and I truly considered myself part of the team. I wrote news releases for the Web site, worked in database management, and even developed a communications strategy for a 5K event.

What did you expect to get out of your internship with Alpha Phi? Did you achieve that goal? I expected to get practical, worthwhile experience that would improve my marketing and communications skills, and I certainly achieved that goal.
What was one object that helped you during the course of the internship or couldn't survive without? The kitchen is pretty handy - having the fridge to store drinks or snacks was fabulous.
Where are you now? I am currently finishing my undergraduate studies at Northwestern University in Evanston and will graduate in June [2006]!

 Summer-Fall 2005

Name

Stephanie Nordstrom
Chapter Pepperdine University (IA)
Major Public Relations
Year of Graduation 2006

Please describe your internship experience in three words, and then elaborate on your answer. Planning. Designing. Meeting.

I helped plan and market the Southwest Region’s Founders’ Day. I helped plan the event, designed the invitations, and wrote the follow up release on it. I also got to meet and coordinate with Alpha Phi alumnae and with Alpha Phis from other chapters.

What did you expect to get out of your internship with Alpha Phi? Did you achieve that goal? I expected to be able to learn while serving the organization that has
given me so much. I got experience in event planning while learning
Alpha Phi history and meeting so many amazing women.

What was one object that helped you during the course of the internship or couldn't survive without? My cell phone was invaluable. I used it to call Kayee, talk to Lori, and make sure all the chapter presidents knew what was happening.

Where are you now? I’m finishing up my time at Pepperdine and then I'll be traveling as an Educational Leadership Consultant for Alpha Phi!
