Quarterly Reader Survey: The Results Are In

Between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30, 2006, more than 110,000 Alpha Phis were asked to help determine the future direction of the Alpha Phi Quarterly by completing a reader survey. The survey was conducted
via Survey Monkey, and 1,155 people, or 1.05 percent, participated.

Summary

89 percent of respondents were alumnae, with the largest percentage (24.2 percent) in the 24-30 age range. The majority of respondents receive the Quarterly via mail (81.5 percent) and read all four issues (71.9 percent). Opinions are split regarding whether respondents would read the Quarterly if distributed as a newsletter via e-mail rather than as a magazine delivered via U.S. mail. The majority (83.3 percent) prefer not to listen to the Quarterly or other Alpha Phi news in the form of a podcast.

Based on the Fall 2006 Quarterly, more than half of respondents agree that current coverage of topics is adequate, except for coverage of collegiate chapter news and alumnae chapter news: collegiate news - 47 percent would like more coverage while 46 percent feel coverage is adequate; alumnae news - 45 percent would like more coverage while 48 percent feel coverage is adequate.

The majority of respondents rate the magazine's cover appeal, ease of reading, use of photos and illustrations and overall impression as either excellent or good. Half say their favorite aspect about the Quarterly is its continued connection to Alpha Phi, and half say their least favorite aspect is too much Fraternity business. 95.8 percent say the magazine helps them feel connected to the Fraternity. 90.3 percent say the Quarterly represents their vision of/for Alpha Phi. 96.7 percent agree the magazine promotes Alpha Phi in a positive manner.

Questions relating to considerations for future issues included: Quarterly cover - the majority of respondents (84.2 percent) prefer to see Alpha Phis on the cover versus non-Alpha Phis, and just over half prefer photography or illustrations that best represent the theme of the issue. Opinions were largely split when asked what magazines respondents would like the Quarterly patterned after in design, writing style or content ideas.

Respondents provided suggestions for future article ideas (373 responses), content changes (251 responses) and alumnae or collegians to profile (141 responses).
