DENTON, TEXAS – Members of Gamma Eta
chapter of Alpha Phi International Fraternity were among more than 120
women from five of the six National Panhellenic Council (NPC) groups on
the University of North Texas (UNT) campus to move into the university’s
new Sorority Row facilities this weekend. Other NPC groups include Alpha
Delta Pi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
The sixth NPC group, Chi Omega, optioned to build a privately-funded
facility at another location.
“We
appreciate the opportunity extended to us by the University of North
Texas administration. The university has continuously demonstrated
support of the Greek system on campus,” said Alpha Phi International
Fraternity Executive Director Susan Zabriskie. “This housing project
helps strengthen the Greek system and build a better tomorrow.”
Since
April 2004, the women of Alpha Phi have been working with their
chapter’s house corporation board to secure funds to complete the
interior construction, design and furnishing of their new
university-owned living and meeting facility. Alpha Phi’s UNT house
corporation board will continue fundraising activities throughout the
year. According to Carol McQueary, the chapter’s house corporation board
president, the women are “excited that after 50 years on UNT’s campus we
will be occupying our first house this fall. This is indeed a historic
occasion.”
The
university held a groundbreaking ceremony last October for the $5.1
million Sorority Row project consisting of five houses totaling 38,000
square-feet. Each housing unit is approximately 7,600 square feet.
“This
has been an amazing opportunity the University of North Texas has
provided to the Greek women on campus. The completion of the
university’s Sorority Row fosters progression of the Greek community and
will afford these women networking opportunities that may not have been
previously available,” said Brandi Peterson, Alpha Phi International
Fraternity housing manager.
Alpha Phi International
Fraternity was founded at Syracuse University in 1872 as one of the
first Greek societies for women. Alpha Phi is dedicated to promoting
sisterhood, cultivating leadership, encouraging intellectual curiosity
and advocating service. The organization is comprised of more than 140
collegiate chapters and more than 130 alumnae chapters throughout the
United States and Canada. The Alpha Phi Foundation is the fraternity’s
philanthropic and educational partner. Through contributions from
chapters, individual members and friends, the foundation supports
women’s cardiac health and other charitable and educational projects.
Together, Alpha Phi International Fraternity and Foundation develop
character for a lifetime.
