About Amanda
Amanda Nguyen (Iota Tau-Harvard) is the founder and CEO of Rise and a 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. In 2013, she was raped. When she learned that Massachusetts law allowed her rape kit to be destroyed unless she filed to save it every six months, she wrote a new law. The federal Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act was signed into law by President Obama on Oct. 7, 2016, and a Massachusetts law passed less than two weeks later. To help others fight for rape victims’ civil rights, Amanda began the nonprofit Rise, which has now passed 24 laws for 46 million people. Among other notable accolades, Amanda was nominated for a 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for her “unprecedented efforts in bringing equal protection under the law and basic human rights to all survivors of sexual assault, regardless of geography.” Amanda recently launched a new area of Rise called Rise Justice Labs, which helps other activists craft their own legislative solutions. In her free time, she plays piano, composes music and watches rocket launches—the three-time NASA intern ultimately plans to be an astronaut. “My Alpha Phi sisters are so supportive,” Amanda says. “They are still some of my closest friends who have given me strength throughout everything.”
