Alumnae Initiation

Extending the Alpha Phi Experience

In 1875, Frances E. Willard became the first alumna initiate of Alpha Phi International Fraternity. She was an American educator, reformer and sought-after public speaker who acted as a mentor to Alpha Phi members early in the Fraternity’s history. Her impact on our sisters and commitment to our ideals inspired Alpha Phis to extend membership in a non-traditional way. Today, Alpha Phi continues to extend membership to outstanding non-collegians committed to the principles of friendship, sisterhood and support.

Alpha Phi also offers a special program in which mothers of new collegiate members may be initiated alongside their daughters. Campus professionals and faculty members on campuses where Alpha Phi is present are also valued candidates. Additionally, we welcome the sponsorship of friends, relatives and colleagues for initiation into membership.

Alumnae Initiation Quick Guide

Who may be initiated?

  1. A mother, stepmother or female relative of an Alpha Phi in good standing.
  2. A woman who has been involved and continues to be involved in Alpha Phi activities and functions.
  3. A woman whose public stature or professional accomplishments evidence her value as a potential member of the Fraternity.

The candidate must not be an initiated member of any other NPC group, nor may she be a woman who could be of potential collegiate membership status, whether or not Alpha Phi has a chapter on the campus that the potential alumna initiate currently attends.

Who may sponsor an alumna initiate?

  1. Alumnae of Alpha Phi in good standing may sponsor a candidate for alumnae initiation. Members in good standing have met all financial obligations to the Fraternity, including payment of annual alumnae dues.
  2. Initiated collegiate members of Alpha Phi in good standing may only sponsor a female relative with the required endorsement of their chapter advisor or the chapter advisor’s designee.

What is the process?

  1. The alumnae initiation application is completed by the Alpha Phi sponsor on Alpha Phi’s website a minimum of four weeks prior to the proposed date of Initiation. Elements of the application include:
    1. A letter of recommendation from an Alpha Phi sponsor that addresses: your (the sponsor’s) relationship with the candidate for alumnae initiation, how the candidate reflects the ideals of Alpha Phi and how the candidate’s membership will significantly benefit Alpha Phi.
    2. The proposed date and location of when the Initiation ceremony will take place.
  2. After receiving the sponsor’s application, the candidate will receive an email from the Executive Office asking her to:
    1. Submit a personal statement outlining why she wants to be an Alpha Phi.
    2. Pay an alumnae initiation fee of $177.00 ($214.00 Canadian) which includes the first year of their international alumnae dues, the standard gold-filled badge and membership certificate. Candidates are given the opportunity to upgrade their badge and/or upgrade to lifetime dues.
  3. If approved for alumnae initiation, the candidate and her sponsor will receive notification of approval via email. No candidate may be initiated prior to receiving notice of their approval.
